Closing Prayers

At the end of every meeting, the group or an individual should pray. But we understand that spontaneously praying in front of a group can be daunting! So, Leaders-of-the-Week, please feel free to select one of the following to pray, either you alone or recite as a group. You might even choose one to be your group’s signature prayer, and all commit it to memory.

A Covenant Prayer in the Wesleyan Tradition (Contemporary Version)
I am no longer my own, but yours.
Put me to what you will, place me with whom you will.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be put to work for you or set aside for you,
Praised for you or criticized for you.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and fully surrender all things to your glory and service.
And now, O wonderful and holy God,
Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer,
you are mine, and I am yours.
So be it.
And the covenant which I have made on earth,
Let it also be made in heaven. Amen.

Suffrage from the Book of Common Prayer (Based on Psalm 85)
Show us your mercy, O Lord;
And grant us your salvation.
Clothe your ministers with righteousness;
Let your people sing with joy.
Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For only in you can we live in safety.
Lord, keep this nation under your care;
And guide us in the way of justice and truth.
Let your way be known upon earth;
Your saving health among all nations.
Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;
Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.
Create in us clean hearts, O God;
And sustain us by your Holy Spirit.

Evening Prayer (to be prayed around a lit candle- from the Book of Common Prayer for Ordinary Radicals)
God, give us the light of love which never fails,
that it may burn in us and shed its light on those around us.
By its brightness give us a vision of that holy city
where the true and never- failing Light, Jesus Christ,
lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

Prayer of St. Patrick
Christ with me,
Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

Prayer of St. John Chrysostom
Almighty God, you have given us grace
at this time with one accord
to make our common supplication to you;
and you have promised through your well-beloved Son
that when two or three are gathered together in his Name
you will be in the midst of them:
Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us;
granting us in this world knowledge of your truth,
and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.
